How do the French, who eat a high fat diet, avoid heart disease?
RESVERATROL, found in Red Wine

Why do the French eat a high fat diet and not get heart disease?
The answer, Resveratrol found in Red wine

What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a dietary agent that has powerful and varied effects on the heart and blood vessels. Resveratrol is a plant compound found in the skin of grapes, blueberries and peanuts. Studies have shown it can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by inhibiting the formation of blood clots and LDL, the bad cholesterol. It also has ability to block the formation of cancer cells, and to return malignant cells back to normal. It is immune deactivating, anti-angiogenic, and appears to help prevent heart disease, diabetes, dementia and other agerelated diseases.

Research has uncovered a range of activities that may make Resveratrol one of the most advantageous agents ever found for the treatment of a broad area of human health problems.

Wine has attracted great attention from modern medicine; far more scrutiny has been devoted to this beverage than any other.

Recently, researchers in Denmark studied 25,000 people to determine the effect of drinking alcohol on mortality and found that the overall risk of dying from any cause is lowered about

HEART HEALTH & RESVERATROL
Nitric oxide, which occurs naturally in the body, is critically important to serious brain/spinal trauma or stroke. In these types of injuries, the body's response causes further injury, and for that reason, people are treated with drugs like cortisone, and in the case of stroke-aspirin. The idea is to reduce the body's inflammatory response to the injury. The study from China showed that Resveratrol, when injected immediately after injury, reversed the signs of inflammatory response to spinal cord injury on a level comparable with Cortisone, but with better energy co pensation and protection against free radicals. It is possible that regular use of Resveratrol supplements will enable the body to withstand a stroke or other injury proper heart and artery function. It allows blood vessels to "relax," which improves blood flow. In a recent study, the amount of nitric oxide in the body was decreased about one-third by a high-cholesterol diet. Resveratrol supplements significantly reversed this. [2] In this respect, Resveratrol is similar to Viagra, which also affects nitric oxide. However, Viagra affects only small blood vessels, while Resveratrol affects the main arteries.

In addition, Resveratrol stops the proliferation of cells in blood vessels that narrow the arteries[3] and prevents bloo cells from sticking together. [4]

Alzheimer's and Resveratrol
Although the research is very preliminary, studies indicate that Resveratrol supplements may be particularly important for those at risk for Alzheimer's, or for those already affected by it. It is thought that free radicals may initiate the process that leads to the disease.[5] The brain is composed primarily of fatty acids, and just as the heart needs to be protected from oxidized fat, so also does the brain.

Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke and Resveratrol
A recent study by Chinese researchers is important.[6] If confirmed by other researchers, it could be very important for people who undergo serious brain/spinal trauma or stroke. In these types of injuries, the body's response causes further injury, and for that reason, people are treated with drugs like cortisone, and in the case of stroke—aspirin. The idea is to reduce the body's inflammatory response to the injury. The study from China showed that Resveratrol, when injected immediately after injury, reversed the signs of inflammatory response to spinal cord injury on a level comparable with Cortisone, but with better energy compensation and protection against free radicals. It is possible that regular use of Resveratrol supplements will enable the body to withstand a stroke or other injury to the brain. This has been demonstrated in rodents pretreated 21 days with Resveratrol.[7] Less motor damage and less brain damage occurred poststroke.

The study from China showed that Resveratrol reversed the signs of inflammatory response to spinal cord injury on a level comparable to cortisone, but with better energy compensation and protection against free radicals, when injected immediately after injury. It's possible that if a person regularly takes Resveratrol supplements, they will be more likely to withstand a stroke or other injury to the brain. This has been demonstrated in rodents pretreated 21 days with Resveratrol. [7] Less motor damage, and less brain damage occurred post-stroke.

Cancer and Resveratrol
to demonstrate solid evidence that it blocks or stops many stages of cancer. Resveratrol not only prevents cancer, but it is also being proposed as an additional treatment.[8-10] The number of studies has grown in the past three years, and the depth of our knowledge has increased with each report. Resveratrol is a broad-spectrum agent that stops cancer in many different ways, from blocking estrogen and androgens to modulating genes.[11-13] Researchers in Austria have performed elaborate studies showing that Resveratrol blocks the ability of cancer cells to metastasize to bone (30-71%).[14] The greatest results were for pancreas, breast, and renal cancers. Prostate and colon cancers were also inhibited, but at a lower percentage of success. Resveratrol also acts against Linoleic Acid, a major component of the Western diet that promotes the growth of cancer cells. It has been proven that the Western diet can cause colon cancer in rodents, without the presence of any other chemical or factor.[15] In a study from Japan, Resveratrol, in an amount easily obtained by supplementation, inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells, and blocked the growth-promotingeffects of linoleic acid from the Western diet.[16]

Resveratrol works against a wide range of cancers, both at the preventive and treatment stages. Its ability to stop cancer is connected to its capability to distinguish a cancer cell from a normal cell. Unlike chemotherapeutic drugs that affect normal as well as cancer cells, Resveratrol does not damage healthy cells; it actually protects them.[17-18]

Resveratrol Activates a Longevity Gene
In a widely publicized report, researchers at Harvard Medical School and BIOMOL Research Laboratories have demonstrated that Resveratrol activates a "longevity gene" in yeast that extends life expectancy by 70%. The effects mimic those of calorie restriction, the only proven way of extending maximum life span. Resveratrol activates one of the same "sirtuin (SIR)" genes as calorie restriction. Although the research has only been done in yeast, flies and worms so far, humans have their own version of the same life span-extending gene..

How Much Resveratrol Is In Wine
Very little (less than a milligram per glass).

How do I get enough Resveratrol in my daily diet?
The only sure way to obtain the proper amount of Resveratrol daily is to take a standardized extract. Standardization ensures a consistent amount of Resveratrol with high quality.

The Hidden Dangers of Alcohol
Although we know there are some benefits from drinking red wine, it must be noted that excessive consumption of alcohol can be dangerous to one's health. Most people associate drinking alcohol with liver cirrhosis. Mortality statistics, however, show that increased cancer risk may be the real concern.

Summary
Because the research on Resveratrol is so voluminous, it is not possible to cover everything in one article. In addition to the benefits mentioned previously, Resveratrol has been tested for its ability to alleviate pain,[19] stop the growth of the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers that can lead to cancer (Helicobacter pylori),[20] protect immune cells,[21] protect DNA,[22] protect against skin cancer,[23] and many other conditions. As noted earlier, Resveratrol recently became the first-ever supplement known to activate a longevity gene.

While it is important to point out that a lot of the research on this wine extract has been done only in test tubes or on rodents, the sheer volume suggests that Resveratrol is one of the most versatile and effective plant compounds discovered so far. In addition, Resveratrol represents a hopeful solution to many common problems encountered by aging humans.
